American Express are best known for their travellers cheques and its debit cards. Founded in the 1800's, by 1882 Amex started its expansion into the area of financial services by launching a money order business and when the president of the company (J.C. Fargo) visited Europe and found it difficult to obtain cash, he and Marcellus Berry created the Amex Travellers cheque which was launched in 1891. They then went on to issue the worlds' first plastic embossed Credit Cards in 1959.
